Fanshawe Fashion Show 2010: Unbound

Fanshawe College’s Fashion Design program holds an annual fashion show to showcase the collections of that year’s graduating class. This year’s show, “Unbound”, was held at the London Museum, and featured evening wear, athletic wear, swimsuit collections, and street wear. Here are some of the highlights:

The show was judged by industry insiders like David Dixon, Leesa Butler (Producer of the F-List), Erin O'Brien (an Editor at Flare Magazine), and Maggie Bill (Wardrobe Director of ET Canada). Look for Unbound Magazine, featuring the students' collections, which will be bundled with Flare's September issue all across Canada.

I. Fashion Too Serious?- Gaga Scribbles on Her Purse

So Lady Gaga upset some serious fashionistas this week when she was caught in a Japanese airport with the words, "I love little monster, Tokyo love." This by the way is the same Hermes Birkin bag that Samantha in Sex and the City got fired by Lucy Lu over. Maybe this $6000 purse is a big deal?

II. An Ode to McQueen- First Book Published

A book entitled, Alexander McQueen, Genius of a Generation, written by Kristen Knox is the first book written about McQueen post tragedy. The book traces McQueen's life story, starting with his childhood to and ending with his private show in Paris after his death. The photo filled 128 page volume (120 pages of photos) will go on sale in May.

III. The Face Hunter- Famous Photographer Speaks at The Room

Well known Yvan Rodic, better known as the Face Hunter, was in Toronto on Thursday at an event hosted by The Society and Balenciaga. The event was held at The Room at The Bay, and there he answered questions about the crowd, particularly pertaining to his new book.

This is an exerpt from a Style Notebook article,

"He was most animated when speaking about why he shoots only twentysomethings. “Teenagers haven’t found their individuality yet, and thirties and over don’t need to wear style, they have lifestyles. Those in their twenties only have what they wear to express themselves. They’re still in school, they have small apartments and whatever jobs. Clothing is what sets them apart. It’s all they have.”

Fashion Au Courant- April 3-11

Before I begin, just wanted to apologize for the lack of a post last weekend... exam season, you know how it goes...sorry again!

And here now is this week's fashion news...

I. LG Fashion Week

So LG Fashion week ended last weekend, so many great designers showed off their F/W 2010 seasons. One that I thought was interesting is Sunny Fong, a former contestant on Project Runway Canada. He chose to showcase his VAWK label at the Royal Ontario Museum [ROM]. I liked it as it reminded me of Paris and how they use culture rich places like the Louvre as venues.

II. Ryerson's Mass Exodus

Ryerson certainly lived up to all expectations this year at their Mass Exodus. For those who don't know, the Mass Exodus shows the designs of Ryerson's fourth year fashion students, this year's theme was "In Bloom", symbolizing a feeling of organic transformation.

Jeanne Beker commented on the show saying, "It’s a shame we didn’t see more of this level of theatrical fare at LG Fashion Week. This is the future of Canadian Fashion!"

Designers that everyone is talking about:

Amanda Lew Kee- minimalist collected of layered chiffons, stretch nylon and nappa leather
Genevieve Pearson- used different types of leather to make some really cute and flattering jackets with silver finishing details

III. Being Fashion Conscious- New face of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer

I'm sure that many of you have been seeing the new Fashion Targets Breast Cancer with Kim Cattrall. What many of you may not know is that this campaign was created by Rethink Breast Cancer, which is a Toronto based Breast Cancer Foundation.

The women who run it are amazing, and always doing inventive things to raise money. Right now they've teamed up with Kim Cattral for their new line of Target T-shirts, as well as Harley Davidson. T-Shirts are available for purchase May 1st at Joe Fresh locations.
